Case Study: Exterior Decorating and Painting Hampstead
We recently completed an exterior decoration project in Hampstead, North West London.
The project involved decorating 21 sash windows, a front door, reconnecting gutters, replacing some blown bricks and a couple damaged wooden window sills.
The customer first got in touch at the beginning of Summer but did not confirm the job until October. This meant more rain managed to seep into the wood and caused more damage to the windows and sills.
But not to worry, all is well!
The customers’ main concern was the wooden windows being exposed to bad weather and causing longer-lasting damage to the property. They needed a full weather-proofing decorative job to protect their windows for another 5-years.
On this property we followed the following procedure to decorate the sash windows:
- Apply wet rot wood harden to any mildly damaged windows or sills
- Cut out and replace any wooden areas with major damage
- Sand down wooden frame and sills removing drips and nibs
- Fill with 2-part wood filler
- Sand down
- Apply weather shield undercoat primer
- Fill again with 2-part wood filler
- Sand down
- Apply caulk and silicon to close any edges
- Apply 2x coats of weather shield undercoat (sand in between coats)
It is important to ensure all gaps are sealed around the window so there are no areas water can get into the wood and property. Water finds its way eventually, especially when the weather expands and shrinks the paint, caulk and filler.
Our customers were happy and the difference in the windows was night and day compared to how they were before we started. We’ve added some pics so you can take a look. Of course, they are not new windows and we were up against some short-handed work from before but nonetheless, they scrubbed up very well!

Finding a reliable, professional and local decorator for exterior painting and decorative work can be tricky. Normally, a recommendation is a way to go or if you see somebody doing good work on another property, stop and ask for their card. Pro decorators should have cards 😅.
